A major figure among the new generation of Russian artists, Sergei Sherstiuk was born in 1951. He graduated from the Shevchenko Art Institute in 1970 and from the Moscow University Dept. of Art History in 1979. Early on he became a member of the group known as "Semidesyatniki" (The 70-ers). The 70's was a critical decade in the long history of the official Soviet art when a strong body of young artists emerged. Symbolism and allusion abounded. Greatly influenced by the American Photo Realism style, Sherstiuk became a member of "The Group of Six", now defunct, founded in Moscow in 1980. In 1985 the group broke up, each member turning to new approaches in art. In the 1990's Sherstiuk started working in a Neo-Baroque style. The artist explains these artistic searchings: "Culture is a book, and art is its page. The meaning of the book is unknown because its pages are infinite. No artist is given the opportunity to see the end." Sergei Sherstiuk died in Moscow in 1998.
